I have a 1997 searay sundancer 300 with duel 5.7 efi and bravo 3 drives. Wife took the boat out a couple of weeks ago and lost the water pump belt on one motor. Mech said alternator had frozen so belt came off. She never got a alarm and motor overheated pretty bad. She new she had a problem when smoke was coming out. I had the shop where we keep the boat do the repairs. I guess about eveything made of rubber melted on that motor including bellows and shift cable so boat was pulled soon as she made it to the docks. I had the repairs done and was told boat was ready to go started it up and it ran pretty rough. Called mechanics back now they say the head gasket is blown on one side. pressures were 175,175, 140, 175 on one side other side was 175, 30, 35, 175 on other side. What the price is to replace both head gaskets I could almost pay for a remanufactured motor and have it installed through another shop I called. Motors have about 1100 hours on them. I asked the shop that did the bellows and stuff about changing the motor and I was told I would need to change both motors because the new motor and older motor won't work well together. The other shop said it would be fine so I'm a bit confused. So my question is, is that true? Would I need to replace both motors or just the bad one. The money I have spent on the one motor could have almost covered the cost of two motors. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Engine overheated

I just went though a major repair on my engine (5.7 MPI) and, had I known the cost ahead of time (my own fault) I would probably have just gotten a new crate engine.

However, in your case, why the heck so much money to replace a head gasket? If that's really all it needs, that shouldn't be more than a few hours of a labor and maybe 100 bucks in parts, no? Big difference between a 500 dollar repair and a 3000 dollar new crate engine.

That said, to answer one of your questions; I have no idea why it would hurt anything to have an old and new motor in the same boat. As long as you sync up the RPMs, what the heck difference does it make?
