Today we went boating and the boat ran great.....all the way up until it started smokin and overheating. I let it cool down, then I took one of the coolant hoses off. It was bone dry. Then I took off the hose from the rear of the boat where the water enters, turned over the engine and no water came out. So I suspect a new impeller. But I thought I would ask you guys what other things it could potentially be? Also, when I took off the hose that runs into the engine block it was filled with rust. It's not my boat, so I am not sure the way it has been maintained. It's an 88' 3.0 merc.
In the case of it being the impellar, how much does the impeller itself cost? And how difficult is the fix? I have a manual, but sometimes it's harder than the it makes it out to be.

If you have the Mercruiser manual and have never done it before, follow the manual.

If you have an aftermarket manual, good luck.

If you want a Mercruiser manual and don't have one, click here. It's free and online.

r-snowrider...We never got to the bottom of the 'no spark with trim up question'. I'll bet there is now. :D You are in Don S.'s most capable hands now, listen well....and learn... :p ...JK P.S. Never start your motor in the 'trailer position unless it is a matter of 'life or death... :D

I think the trim up is the reason it was overheating. I'll look into that. To get back to the shore today I had to continually dump water into that main feeder hose, while my girlfriend idled the boat back to land. Land was like 2 miles away, but I was surprised I could get enough aqua into the block to keep it at a safe temperature. But man, did we ever look like idiots.
