Re: Engine parts from a '56 ford
GGk1-
You mention a 56 Ford then talk about a 470 Merc engine. Were you thinking interchangeable parts? No... I hope.
The 470 is an aluminum engine made exclusively by Mercruiser. The head is cast iron and off a 460 ford. They used that head so that so they could get cross flow ventilation, power and economy. They made a 485 too but I think it's nothing more than a 470 with a 4bbl carb. May be wrong there but it's not important for this discussion.
As for a starter I don't remember if it was Ford or not but be very careful! Marine parts are spark protected and one off the shelf at your local NAPA dealer is not. Don't skimp on buying a marine starter, even if it's a rebuilt one. The risk is not worth a life if the spark from the commentator meets gas fumes.
If you are savvy in rebuilding starters that's what I'd do. Most suppliers will have brush kits for marine starters. Undercut the commentator with a hacksaw blade, then dress it up with some emery paper on a lathe or a drill press. Test it for shorts and reassemble her. It's not that tough.
