ENGINE POPPING IN AND OUT OF GEAR HELP!

ok I fixed the fuel line problem and cleaned out the carb. now it seems that my chrysler 105 is deffinately popping in and out of gear. I do not yet have a manual for guidance, please help? What should I do first to rectify this problem. (I would like to spend at least one day on the lake without problems!) a loud pop followed by the boat jumping happens at any throttle speed and almost continous. what needs fixed/adjusted/replaced?

I am not familiar with your engine, so my answer will be a bit generic.<br /><br />You clutch dog, actually a cog type gear, is not engaging fully, or it is worn.<br /><br />You may be able to adjust the shiftrod to fully engage the gear. Or you may have to replace the clutchdog.<br /><br />Replacement requires disassembly of the lower unit.

Tore lower unit apart clutch dog and gears appear to be very lightly worn(possibly newer) adjusted cable today at lake no popping at slow idle, loud popping and motor jumping at half to full throttle

If all else fails, try reversing the dog. Worked for me.

Its possible that the shifter seal is too tight...replacing it might correct the problem. <br /><br />There is also...in some cases a second shifter seal located below the shifter link that will not let the rod move freely. My customers have had problems with those.<br /><br />Also...check the YOKE at the end of the P/S if its brass...replace it with a SS one.<br /><br />Cheap fix for the clutch face. Some machine shops can cut a new face on the cluch and gear. Making them almost like new.<br /><br />TMD

thanks I am waiting for the machine shop operator to return from vacation to fix the gear/clutch. hopefully we will be back on the water mid week.
