Engine problems

I have a 1978 Mariner 80 HP motor. I replaced the internal wire harness on it. Before I put the ignition switch and wires back into the control box I was able to turn it over. I got everything done (I thought) and hooked it up to the battery. It sparked violently. I took the control box apart and found some bare wires touching so I knew it was a short. I fixed the bare wires and now when I turn the key it barely wants to turn over and the negative battery cable starts smoking. What could I have fried when I had the short in the ignition switch? I'm thinking the rectifier. Is that a good place to start? Thanks for any help.

Billy

Re: Engine problems

If the negative cable is smoking, then that is most likely where your problem is. They can 'corrode' inside the lining...
