I have a problem that I hope you all will be able to help me with!!!
My friend has a Fletcher GTO with a mercruiser inbord engine with stern drive (Alpha 1) now the problem is that my mate forgot to a) flush the engine with fresh water after using it in salt water :( and B) didn’t winterise the boat! :(

Now when we came to get the boat ready last week, we couldn’t get the motor to turn over, further inspection showed large quantities on mayo in the engine. I have now striped the heads of the engine to revile that the engine is very rusty  every thing has lots of surface rust, cam shaft, valves and valve gear.

I need help in 1st identifying the engine, where do I find the engine number?? I know it’s a V6. Once identified where can I source a service manual?? Do you suspect that the crank and rods will be as bad as the top of the engine??? Can any of the rusted parts be reused once cleaned up??
I am new to marine engines, but have lots of experience with auto’s, is there anything special I need to consider when rebuilding this motor?? Sorry for the long post.
Thanks

Re: Engine rebuild??? (newbi)

Well,...... The Year of Manufacture is a Great Place to Start.....

What Year is the boat ??
2bbl. or 4bbl. Carb.??

A V6 in a Mercruiser Has to be a 4.3l Chevy,.. It's the only 1 they ever used........
if it's the Original, there'll be a tag down on the Block Flange, by the starter......

If Not,.... The Casting # is at the rear of the Port head, on the Block......

I'd Guess that All of the motor is JUNK, if the cam looks that bad....
There MayBe Some salavageable parts,.. a Tear-down will tell.....
