engine rebuild or buy remanufactured

Ran boat last sat. Boat ran 67 mph but would not idle for nothing. Checked compression on my Johnson 150 Gt (88yr) model after warmup and checks were not good. 80 95
85 90
70 85
I pulled the head off and looked at #6 and noticed a small groove forming on bottom of cylinder wall. It was completely grooved on the whole travel of the piston. My question is this, what would be my best option? Would having it rebuilt be cheaper than a re-manu powerhead? Who do you recommend if to be rebuilt or re-manu at a reasonable $$$.

Well nina....I think you gotta weight both options toward the purse strings and what kind of warranty is attached to both. I'm sure your local dealer would give you a rebuild price. You can also check iboats store for remand blocks. Shop around.

You don't say how old the engine is.
If you are going to rebuid, do ALL cylinders.
You may be better off purchasing a new powerhead
because essentially your starting with 0 hrs,
plus you will more than likely get a much longer warranty. Your #s don't sound good. Did you check the condition of your head gaskets?

Sorry- just noticed you did mention it is a 1988-
16 years old-my previous post still holds true.
If and after you checked everything, (head gaskets, etc.) and nothing helps, I'd probably go with a new powerhead, and If your engine is a VRO- update the system.

Salty Sal. That was the reason I took head off, to check head-gasket and looked into the #6 cylinder and noticed the groove running the entire length of piston run. The groove is not a deep groove but you can feel it to the touch and see the scoring on cylinder wall. The head-gasket as far as I can tell just looks very old.
Just replacing the headgaskets wouldn't be enough though would it? I figured seeing that groove and not seeing any in the other cylinders made me wonder for the rebuild or remanu and besides that the motor is 16 yrs old. Thanks for help but need to go to bed.

Hi Nina- Look at it this way.
1-Labor- You'll save money on powerhead because it less labor intense because they are not ripping it apart., not re-boring
your cylinders. They'll use
your carbs, flywheel and electronics.
In BOTH cases your lower unit will be pressure checked, with a new water pump installed and your carbs rebuilt.
2- Warranty- 90 days(rebuild) VS. 1 year+ (powerhead)
3- New powerhead = ALL new bearings, pistons, crankshaft, etc. Only the block is refurbished. Theoretically speaking 0 hrs
4- Other problems you can run into with a rebuild is that the block needs to be checked for cracks in theports and water jacket needs to be in decent shape, along with your crankshaft.
I went through this last year with my 140 hp(1985). In my case, I lost a piston in which
the crown split apart
and messed up the cylinder dome. There was
also some pitting on my crankshaft.
In my case, I got a new powerhead because in the long run it was CHEAPER and far more practical. Check out this website - 25% off is real good. Best of luck to you.
