I have replaced my 1983 Mercruiser 898(305) I/O with a 350 block. I finally got it back together and took it out on the water today.

There is a slight knocking sound coming from top of engine. I don't know if it is coming from valve covers or not. I bought the engine from RapidOMarine which was a reman. engine.

I know the timing is right on. Could there possibly be a loose rocker in head that needs adjusted? If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

I have alot invested at this point and don't want to damage anything. Thanks in advance.

Re: Engine Rebuilt Test

You REALLY need to be contacting "RapidOMarine" first, and not us. They are the ones that authorize the warranty work, and what we may say could be wrong in their book.
When they are done weasling out of the warranty and the repair is on you, we may be able to help.

Re: Engine Rebuilt Test

I have just recently seen AND heard a fairly new Mercruiser that came into my shop. 1st time out this year after we winterized his boat/motor. You would have thought that there was "twelve angry men" lock'd up inside this thing. At idle, it sounded like all the lifters broke and/or most of the rod bearings were stolen and the crank was all buggered up!! Now, I'm familiar with "mechanical" noises to tell you that this is/was a serious problem internally, HOWEVER, it turns out that the customers fuel (which we had added the fuel conditioner to last fall) was the crappiest you have ever seen.It was OK back in the fall as he had been using the boat up 'till October with fairly fresh gas. Hazy, cloudy and smelled as if it wasn't gas at all! Something you just wouldn't expect to go this bad in such a short time..... Long story short?? Remove as much as possible, re-fill with mid-grade, motor runs 100% with not having made the mistake of tearing into it "looking" for some obscure mechanical "phantom" problem. Perhaps you have the same?? Bad gas, strange running noises/problems!! ??

Uh, ya didn't adjust the valves when you first fired it up? Only way to be sure they're right is a running adjustment.

How do you do a valve adjustment on my engine then? They sent me the block with the heads already installed and should have adjusted them after the heads where put on.

Re: Engine Rebuilt Test

You gotta adjust those valves with the engine running. The remanufacturer didn't run the engine...they never do.

Pull the valve covers and adjust the valves. If you don't know how, you can look it up in your manual. It's not hard.

Bondo,

There is that...messy. But oil is good for you...it gets under your fingernails and colors 'em up real nice-like. Grease is even better...especially old grease.

And there's nothing like cranking down on the nuts on a 350 and hearing it get all quiet, too. Of course, all my experience is under the hood of a car...not a boat. I hope there's plenty of room there.

It is not necessary to run the engine to adjust the valves on a Chevy V8.
Here is how I do it, and have never had a problems.
This came out of a Mercruiser service manual.

Dang Don, he needs to learn the hard way before teaching them shortcuts. Actually I've had problems with the full turn down after 0 lash. Several times they came in too tight. Got them neat clips that keep the oil from spraying everywhere.

Chillin...

Call Raul right away. He is very helpful.

If you read his policy, you will see that valve adjustment is your responsibility.
