I want to pull my engine this year to build a 383 stroker. I blew a head gasket at WOT which has destroyed the engine (runs but has miniumal power)I do not have a manual. Does someone have the information available? The engine is an 89 350 mag mated to an alpha drive. In addition, I might switch to a bravo unit as the HP will be about 330 which will push the limit of the alpha. Any info on the conversion process will be helpful

One big thing to think about is the amount of money you will be putting into a 15 year old boat.
And when you get tired of it, will you get any where near what you have invested in the boat.
What you propose will work, but you are going to spend some big bucks.

Buy borrow or steal the book by the GOD of GM HP Marine engines, Dennis Moore: "Small Block Chevy Marine Performance" Published by HP books. Iboats listes it on the site, but it is NEVER in stock. It's sometimes on ebay, Amazon sells it, or call Dennis....his website is www.mooreperformance.org

Dennis covers building a marine stroker quite well in the book.

I wouldn't worry about the Alpha...I know people running a lot more than 330 HP through them and they hold up will IF: you don't hammer it out of the hole, jump the boat, and switch to a full synthetic drive oil.

Ditto on the not being "ham handed" with that much power in front of an Alpha.

If you run a carb you should have no problem , however if you plan on running tbi you will need some one to write a program and burn it into a chip.

Re: Engine Removal---383 stroker

My thoughts are bring the engine with me when I move hulls or keep the boat as a ski boat for family and friends while upgrading to something bigger.

I want to do most of the rebuild my self short of block prep, crak balancing etc. I already have the crank (Scat forged 400 with 350 mains).

I have thought of buying a newer motor but getting them in a place where the water is frozen for 6 months of the year is a costly endevour (Taxes, duty. shipping and exchange).

I do have the book as mentioned above as well as the big block version.

My key question about pulling the motor is do you have to remove the drive or can you do it without.

If anyone has good links for cheap parts that would also be helpful

Gotta pull the drive.

I buy a lot of engine stuff on ebay, and from classifieds in some performance boating sites I hang out in.

Stroke that baby!

I rebuilt the 350 in my '71 Van this past year, If I had the $ I would have built a stroker, but the pennies just weren't there.

Even if you do scrap the boat, you can use that engine in a vehicle, or just sell it.
