Hi all,
As you may have guessed from the subject, I am looking for information about engine removal. I have searched for info but have not found anything that answers my question.
My boat is described in my signature. I have the Clymer manual for OMC stern drives 1964-1986 models. It states that the stern drive MUST be removed in order to remove the engine. It also states that the intermediate housing is slide out when housing bolts have been removed.
My question is, if I removed the bolts from the bellhousing, why can't I then remove the engine by moving it forward and then up?
There are no pictures in the manual to show me what is inside the bellhousing in the way of a coupler/clutch assembly, but from what I have read, I can't see why it wouldn't work as the only thing that is necessary to line up there is the ball gear shaft, as far as I can decifer from the manual. Would this not be somewhat similar to lining up to a standard transmission in a vehicle?

Any advise is appreciated, thanks,

You are on the right track here... remove the drive then the engine along with the housing as one piece. good luck!

Re: engine removal help

Thanks for the reply Rabidfish.
Maybe you misunderstood, I was hoping to leave the bellhousing/intermediate housing in the boat and just slide out the engine.
Is it possible? What is inside the bellhousing that it needs to stay with the engine?

Re: engine removal help

the only thing in there is bearings & a shaft.

It is usually easier to remove as a single unit.

Re: engine removal help

Are those bearings on the end of the ball gear shaft?
Is it only the shaft that must be lined up when reinstalling the engine?
