Hey guys, I really love the forums , I have been reading so much good info since I got my boat. I finally decided to take on rebuilding some stuff and join the network. My problem is, I have a merc 228 w/ alpha 1 drive. I am going to be pulling the engine to replace my transom assembly and gimbal housing. My engine has no eye loops to hook a chain to. Where are the points to hook too that I will be ok and not crush or break anything. Thanks

If you have no loops on the intake, you can use a bolt hole on the front or back of the head. I used to use a 3/8" bolt with a washer on it, through a chain, from the front of one head to the back of the other. Works well, and it approximately the same position where the lift loops would be if they were installed.

Glad you got it out. Chris has it right - in fact, amazingly enough the loops are not there to pull the engine. I seem to remember reading that the loops are just used to temporarily move the engine for adjustment, but are not recommended for pulling it out.

(Having said that - if they are there I usually use them. :D )
