need to know if removing murcruiser 260 5.7l without removing drive shaft from stern drive first is possible

I have everthing removed from engine for removal except the drive shaft do you know if the engine can be removed unbolting the mountsand belhousing and front pulley , I can not get the drive to shift into forward gear to remove the stern drive

Yes, the engine can be swung forward off of the splines without pulling the drive.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... The drive Has to come off,.......

When removin' the motor, there's an extreme chance of bendin' the drive shaft,.......
When installing, ya gotta align the motor, so the drive needs to be off,.....

Please don't start multiple threads on the same subject.

You can get it out if there is room to move the motor forward about 8-12 inches to get the driveshaft out of the coupler and clear the cover.

You won't be able to reinstall the motor without taking the drive off. And alignment should be checked with the drive off anyway.

What is stopping from putting the drive in forward?

Fix your shift issue, it will save you headaches.

as indicated above by Bondo and GA, you need the drive off anyway to re-install.

dumb question but why won't it come off if in gear? Can't get the shift cable out if in gear i suppose?? Probably needs to be replaced anyway.....

Ayuh,...... Drop the lower unit 1st, then the shift shaft will drop down abit, 'n you can pull the upper unit, even when not in forward gear,......
