Hello, all I was cruising along when all of a sudden the engine revs real high and propulsion stops. Look in the bilge and its full of gear oil. Find out my outdrive is frozen so I got a rebuilt outdrive. My question is do you all think the coupler is blown and it so how hard is it to pull the engine? I know once the engine is out its an easy repair. Thank you.

Not hard to pull the engine.

Don't know what outdrive is frozen means. If it locked up and wouldn't turn, but the engine revved, then yes, your coupler is shot. If you grenaded the gears in the outdrive from lack of lube, then your coupler is probably fine. Since you didn't say, I'm assuming that you have the exact same boat, engine, and outdrive configuration that I do.

first step in pulling the motor is pulling the outdrive.

once the outdrive is off, pulling the rest of the motor is easy.

I have an 18 Wellcraft with a 4.3 Alpha 1 Gen 2. The boat is an 89. The top half of the outdrive will not turn meaning the yoke and the bottom half will not turn either when they are sepperated.

Pulling engine is easy if you have an "A" frame. Most car engine hoist not high enough. Hopefully I missing something what the secret to getting a high enough lift?

Once the drive is off, take a good flashlight and look through the gimbal bearing at the coupler. If it was smoked it should be visible in the rubber around the splines.

I use a small tractor with a bucket to pull motors. Others have hired tow trucks to come by and pull the motor. Building A-frames is not hard. Saw one person mounted a regular motor picker in the bed of his pickup and pulled it from there.

Update: The problem was the outdrive and it had frozen causing the coupler to blow out. I was going to do it myself but I had no way of taking the motor out. I took to someone and its done. Case closed.
