hi guys new to the boating world, im replacing the engine in my 92 larson hampton 220, original engine was merc 5.7 with the newer style after the changes gm made in 87. The new (older) engine i picked up is pre 87 volvo 260, i know the blocks are the same minus the accesories. My question is will the flywheel and starter from the volvo engine work, or will i need to buy a pre 87 merc flywheel? ive already swapped all the merc accesories over, power steering, alternator, and wire harness!

I think the flywheel change is 85 and earlier, this is related to switch from to piece to one piece rear main seal

The flywheel will be the same. After 1985 the flywheel changed to current one

The one piece rear main seal started in 1986, but note marine is usually behind with motors. Check the block serial number to verify

thanks bud yea i know the original engine in the boat was a one piece rear main engine and center bolt valve covers, but the volvo 260 i picked up if i remember when i looked has a one piece rear main too but has perimiter bolt valve covers, if the flywheel happens to be different i should just pick up a pre 86 flywheel and matching starter?

If you have a 1985 or newer the flywheel is the same
Hey @Scott Danforth

Your going to get a reduction in HP going to a pre-vortec motor

Just noticed been in private discussion , updating thread
also im almost psitive the new (older) engine has a one piece rear main but it doesnt make sense becausr it has perimiter bolt valve covers

That just means the heads are different. In 1995 the vortec heads started and this is where the extra HP comes in

yea i dont think the original engine was vortec the boats only a 92

Need to keep the info in this thread so others can see
