Engine Running Hot then Quit

Greetings all, newbie here. Water looks nice so I'm going to jump right in...

'88 21' Sea-Ray Sorrento with 5.7 Mercruiser (carburated) and Alpha 1 outdrive. Been out of the water for the last two years but winterized properly for Midwest climate an outdoor storage.

I've owned boat for 10 years and have replaced impeller once about 5 years ago. When I started motor, ran well but temp went to about 180. Usually it runs about 145. In the driveway with hose hooked up, water coming out under bellows seemed warmer on one side than the other (as you're standing at the back of the boat and looking at outdrive, water warmer on left side).

Took boat out for a cruise on Friday night and noted still running about 180 or so for water temp. When I got on plane, temp went down to usual 145. Slowing down to idle and going slow, temp went up to 200 so I increase speed and temp came down to 180 or so. Did this for about 30 minutes for a nice cruise in the river and got out into the "big lake" and motor just died. Tried to start but wouldn't fire, then started briefly and backfired, then died again. Temp was still around 180 when this happened. After a few minutes, turned ignition on, and temp at 220 (limit of gauge). Figured that was residual heat from motor with no fresh water pumping through. Engine oil on dipstick looks new (just put it in) and was at appropriate level. No steam or water leaking from motor.

Gotta tow to trailer and got it home. About two hours after this happened, motor started and ran in my driveway. Today, hooked up hose and started motor. Seemd to run fine with water temp going back up to 180. Opened all four "petcocks" and lots of water drained from all of them.

So, I am in the process of replacing impeller, but wondering if anyone has any thoughts. I have done NOTHING to the cooling system other than replace impeller once and drain system and fill with anti-freeze in the fall.

And ideas would be appreciated!

High temp at idle that drops with increased RPM is classic symptom of impeller taking a set --- replace it.

As for why it died. Might be no spark. Print out the thunderbolt IV troubleshooting instructions that you can find in your manual and do the test next time it dies.

OK..got impeller out and have new one, but I'm thinking I may have the wrong part/number. Impeller I took out has 47-89964-3 stamped on it and the new one has 47-59362T 1 on the sealed package. New one appears a bit bigger than the part I took out.

Part store closed at two today.

Thanks for considering.

I put a new floor/carpet in the boat so had the fuel tank drained. Had 20 gallons of fresh fuel in it. New Fuel Filter/Water separator, as well as oil change and new oil filter.

I will say, I have never put plugs, wires, distributor cap or rotor in the 10 years I've owned it, and have no idea when that was done last. Unless someone here says otherwise, I am going to do all that as well since I still have all the seats and engine cover out of it yet.

Finally, these motors don't have a "shutoff" if the motor gets too hot, do they?

Thanks for your replies!

47- 89984T 4 is the part number for an alpha impeller
47- 59362T 1 is for most Bravo impellers

should be a lot bigger

"Finally, these motors don't have a "shutoff" if the motor gets too hot, do they?"
only when they do the death rattle

Thanks..I specifically told him the Alpha drive. High Schoolers working the parts desk on Sunday. I should have known better.

Can't say there was any "death rattle". She just shut right down in a second or so. Fired up like normal in the driveway just a couple of hours ago.

Death rattle, that's funny in certain sense I suppose...

They can get so hot that they dont wanna run at idle, but you can force them at higher rpms. Thats usually when they do the death rattle, and shut down real bad, never to live again. Usually associated with some odd squealing and often times a grinding followed by a heavy knocking sound!!

That's not at all what I experienced and that sounds like a good thing. Not sure I want to hear the death rattle, but I do greatly appreciate the description...feeling a bit better and will pursue some other avenues to diagnose the issue(s).

Great forum! Who would have thunk I could get so many responses on a Sunday afternoon in the summer!

Thanks all!

The overheat death rattle that I was talking about is usually a “ping ping ting ting ping ping” that lasts about 1 – 2 minutes after the engine shuts down.

Nope...that wasn't it for me. I'm assuming she wouldn't fire up after that?!?!?

Oh, your referencing the diesel death rattle. The one where the last breath actually sounds like the engine is expiring, and gives one last ppffffffttttttt sssshhhhhhh. Right out the carb?
