own a sea ray with v8 305gm mercruiser, it's been running hotter than usual, just replaced water pump(lower drive and circulating engine pumps) what would happen if i take the thermostat off, just like in older cars i do most of my boating in temperatures above 90 degrees, water temp probably 70-75 dgrees, is it a most to have a thermostat i a standard cooling system(not closed system)thanks,Ed

could be the therm. or could be clogged manifolds and risers.

Yes, you need a thermostat in it. Get the Mercruiser 143° stat. Without it, the water goes through the block too fast and you end up with hot spots.

Since it was running fine before (I assume)here is the question I always ask:

What changed?

You have a symptom (hot), removing the thermostat will just mask the problem at best, setting yourself up for a big problem later on. (I am told that rusted manifolds can leak water back to the cylinders and give you hydrolock)

For this and any problem, find out what changed, then decide what to do. Way cheaper in the end.
