Engine Runs, wont shift into gear

My 1993 Johnson 120 V4 runs and starts, but I lost forward and reverse gear tonight and had to get towed home. I removed the cable to see if I could manually put it into gear, engine off, and the shift lever just swings with absolutely no resistance. Any ideas guys?

Sounds like one end of the shift shaft came loose - most likely the top end. Look just under the bottom carb. You should be able to see where the shaft connects to the linkage the cable connects to.

Thanks, I am going to go check it out after work. If it is that, is it as simple as putting the shaft back where it needs to be or am I gonna have to take apart the entire thing?
