Hi all,
Probably a stupid question but can anyone tell me where the Engine Number is on a '78 115 hp Johnson. Is it the one that is on the tag (with the model number) attached to the mounting bracket or is it on the the hoist ring/clip at the top of the engine (but this just might be a part number)?
Regards
Peter

Model & Serial on the mounting bracket. Duplicate on around "freeze" plug on the powerhead, but that often is just the serial number.

Awesome thanks. O'h I know this is probably way up the garden path. I checked the timing whilst the engine was running at 1500 rpm. #1 cylinder and the timing was 180 degrees out. Is this because there was no load on it? Or is it really 180 degrees out. If so could you point me in the right direction of how to alter the timing???
Thanks
Peter

Freeze plug is not the proper term at all.-Welch plug is the correct term.----Make absolutely sure that you know how to check and adjust the timing.---That is because timing is " fixed " at the factory and needs no adjustment !!

Just curious as to how you come by 180? out? There are no timing marks on the other side of the flywheel. Did you have the light aimed directly opposite of the timing pointer or were you not clipped to the #1 lead?

I just guessed it was app. 180 degrees out as I had it aimed at the other side of the marker. I'm pretty sure it was the number 1 lead. Top right with #1 stamped on the cover??? You may have read my other post but I found out that the 2 cylinders on the right (starboard side) are not firing. I swapped plugs - no difference. I think it's getting some kind of spark as it sets the timing light off - but it may be weak, I sprayed aero-start into the card whilst running - no difference so I don't think it's fuel???? I'm still confused about the timing though -

It is impossible for it to run 180 degrees out.----At least it is impossible for THAT cylinder to run 180 off. Sort of sounds like you have some wires swapped. If not the spark plug wires, then the coil primary wires, or the sensor leads to the power pack.

Try changing the #1 and 3 plug leads -----Ok they are too short you say .---then come up with something as a simple test, or switch the coils.

as always racer beat me to it....Lets hope you can get him or F R to take over this as they are much better when it comes to explaining things in here.

Quit useing "aero-start" or whatever. These run on a gas and oil mix and every squirt of starting fluid does a little damage in the long run.
