The tag on my 350 above the starter says MW015506 and the casting number at the rear of the block is 0243878. Can anyone give me some info on this engine. It does have vortec heads.

I looked at the mortec link but it only shows locations. The serial number I got right from the mercruiser tag.

The mortec site was to show where the casting number locations look like and where they are.
As BT Doc listed, if we use those numbers with a zero then it will be a 1998 5.7

I know the original engine was a 350 mag that came in the boat in 1995 and was replaced a few years ago. Maybe the m indicates a factory reman or something?

You might be correct, look for the casting numbers to verify

Doesn't it have the serials listed on the flame arrestor cover? My 96 shows engine, drive and transom serials.

Any chance of posting a photo of the metal tag riveted just above the engine starter?

The M in front of the W isn't a serial number mercruiser would use.....But it could start with either a M or W then have numbers to follow thereafter. A remanufactured engine from Merc could either start with a 9 or a G....Such as 1G******. Mercury Remanufacturing

Besides the serial number, following the information inside this bulletin may help as well. http://www.marinemechanic.com/merc/distributors/mercurymarine/sterndrive/gmblockcodes.PDF
