1985 OMC 5L V8. I think that is a 302. Engine quits while it is running. First time we had been running at 2000 to 2500 rpm for about an hour. Coming into a marina I throttled back a little and the engine died while running at about 1800 rpm. Engine would just spin on starter and sounded like it had no spark. Several hours later at the marina a mechanic used an ohm meter but when I hit the starter it fired right up.
Second time. We had been running at 1800 rpm for several hours, after slowing down to idle for a bit, when I went to apply throttle the engine began to pick up rpm then just quit, like turning off a switch. after it sat for a few minutes it fired up but when I went to give it throttle again it quit. Could restart by shooting a touch of carb cleaner at the spark arrester. but it would shortly die. This happened twice and I had to be towed in. Later after an hour or so it fired right up and ran fine for the next four days on a camping trip on Lake George NY. High speed and cruising it ran just fine. After first time a Local Mechanic said it was ethenol problems. I should not have any more problems. I don't buy it because I did have problems again. Changed fuel seperator filter and it was clean and no water found. Had coil trouble last year and replaced it. Had distributor rebuilt last year. It does have points.

I really need help as to where to look. My thought is I have a bad coil. But what else should I look at. Themechanic was only showing about 10.5 volts at the outdrive lift relay. We cruise the Erie canal and it is remote at times. I have to find this issue.
