Been through a lot with this boat so I'm hoping this is a simple one.
Out and about today and while at headway speed right after leaving dock, engine instantly shutdown. No cough, no sputter - just dead so I'm thinking its a no spark issue. Attempted to start the engine, and after cranking for a couple of seconds, it started up and ran fine for several hours.
On the way back in it quit again. As soon as I started to get out of the hole it died instantly. Cranked for several seconds and the engine would start to "catch" but would just stop after the key was returned to the run position. Unburnt fuel odor was noticed.
Let the boat sit a few minutes and tried to start again - fired up and we drove back to the dock. Idled around while waiting on the wife to back the trailer up with no issues.
Dizzy, plugs and all cables are new as of three years ago and it sits under a boat cover and under a carport when not in use - so it stays pretty dry.
Water/fuel separator is new this year and fuel was at 1/2 tank.
I didn't play with the lanyard switch but that's something I'm considering. I will also check the throttle position sensor however I don't think its an issue as the boat died while underway, not just a fail to start scenario.
Another component I have a suspicion about is the ignition control module. However, the symptoms are intermittent - has anyone experienced an intermittently functioning ignition control module?
Anything else I should look at? I'm assuming the coil is original - 240 hours on boat now.
I read another thread discussing the tach moving or not moving while engine is being cranked, but the thread never identified any additional info. If the tach doesn't jump when cranking, does that mean there is no spark?
Thanks!
