Hello I am new to this forum so please bear with me: I have a 1992 Galaxy W/A with a 4.3L(262) V6 with the Thunderbolt ignition, it has a carb, the engine is about 5 years old, last summer I was having problem with the thing popping and cutting off, which ended my fishing season early, so this past spring I went ahead and replaced the following parts: Cap, Rotor, sensor wheel, wires, plugs, fuel filter, water separator, oil changed, it ran great until the end of July, the family was going out of town so It was filled up at before we left, it sat on the trailer for three weeks before it got used again, I went down to put it in the water and noticed that the vent for the tank was broken off inside the boat, also noticed that I hadn't hooked up my second battery ( hooked up) and replaced vent and fuel fill. Put boat in water noticed it seemed like it had a rough idle, we out to clear it out and it made it to 2800 rpm's and started sputtering and popping, figure great what the hell happened. went back to the dock unhooked second battery figuring it was causing it. Went out next day with the family for some beach fun and it popped and we idle to the beach area. it would run ok up to 2000 rpm's. Talked to several people they said check you coil, ( put another coil on it- one I had) it ran worse, put old coil back on, also was told replace ignition switch it is always over looked, replaced ran better, but still sputtering, adjust carb no change, pulled fuel separator and drained no water, replaced with new and replaced fuel filter, pulled cap not moister and wires are good. I want to be able to go striper fishing this fall, can anyone help me with this, I plan on getting a new sensor for the distributor this week. Please help.

:welcome: to iboats

With an engine popping through the carb, it's either running real lean or valves and not closing all the way. You said it gets worst the fast it goes. Have you checked timing? I would suggest doing a compression test to check for valve issues.

Ayuh,...... I'd sooner think ya got a Fuel problem or fuel Delivery problem,....

Run it off a remote tank filled with fresh fuel, 'n see what it does,....

Sounds like fuel starvation to me also. Is there a filter in the carb, behind the fuel line? I know most Quadrajets have them, but not sure about 2bbls? If so, this needs to be checked.

I would tell you to check your valve adjustment, maybe somethings loose or the cam is getting worn, but It's easier to check the most probable obvious fuel issues 1st.

Went down to boat last night, checked timing it, looked to be between 10-12 btdc, adjusted it to 8 degrees btdc, cut boat off, tightened retainer bolt back down, started back up check again looked to be back to 10 degrees, what the hell. I am going back down there this afternoon to check it again, also no filter in the inlet side of carburetor, it looks like a weber carb, it is a 4brl. Could a bad ground cause it to act this away also? I think its carb related. it has been rebuilt twice. Once a long time ago and second time about 5 years ago.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... A carb rebuild only lasts til the next time Crud is introduced to it,...... ;)

Pop the top off, 'n have a look,...

'n timin' changin' when tightenin' the distributor ain't nothin' new,...
Ya Always gotta double-check,...

GuyI adjusted the timing to 8 degrees, took it out for a run didn't pop, but was shrugging, like it was dropping a cylinder. I will get my compression tester and start checking cylinders. When I tuned it up all the old plugs where clean. I put r43ts plugs in it. Would that make it run like this, it also has a accel coil. Plug wires look like 8 mm. Old ones where smaller.

Just a heads up, some Mercruiser flat type V6, & V8, Dist. caps were defective, do you have a flat type (crab) cap? Or a standard looking one? The flat caps plastic is so thin they get hairline cracks where the wiring is, and start to misfire.
