After launch and warmup I proceed to my destination, after approximately 15 mins running at idle, I increase rpm and pickup speed. Shortly after that the engine starts to bog down and sputters then quits. Try to restart but will only start with throttle nearly wide open. When I pull back to drop into gear it quits again. This continues for sometime until I give up and try to hail someone to tow me back in. This has happened everyone I've taken the boat out. I'm beginning to think the boat is allergic to saltwater. When I get it home to flush out it runs fine. Scuttling is not an option. Any ideas?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Sounds like a fuel delivery issue,.....

Start by checkin' the Contents of the fuel filter for things other than gasoline,.....

Hi Bondo, thank you. That was one my first thoughts. I have replaced the fuel/water separator, added an inline filter and removed and cleaned the filter in the carb. I also took the carb apart to check for things that don't belong there, nothing there. Took it out again, same thing only sooner. I read a similar post that mentioned dirt in the jets. I think the next step is to soak and blow out the carb plus a rebuild kit.

Howdy

Appears you can idle for some time and have no issues, its only when you throttle up. I would suggest checking the fuel pressure, it should be between 3 to 7 psi.

Getting rid of the in line filter and I checked the fuel pressure. I shoots a 6 foot stream off the back of the boat. I haven't attached a pressure tester yet will do that tomorrow. Bondo when first disassembling the carb, the filter in the carb was 3/4 full of what looked like sandings from varnish. A very fine powder. After knocking that out and soaking the filter I blew it out with compressed air, then reassembled and started it up, ran fine, took it out and was towed back in. After returning home to flush it out it started fine and would hold 2000 rpm with out hesitation. ????? I think it has a little to do with being under load also. I have a friend with a boat that is going to go out with me next time, if it acts up we'll just raft up and I'll use him as my kicker motor to get back to the dock. I have a 9.9 used Honda on order from another friend that will be attached next year.

Could be??? The coil's getting hot.
You'll need to put it back n the water.
Try to make it break down.
Once it's down check the coil.
Touch it. If it's too hot to touch it then it's bad.
It will get warm but not so hot you can't keep your fingers on it.

What is the voltage going into the coil?
Should be about 9v.

The motor takes very little fuel running in neutral even at high rpm's. Under load takes a lot more.

Ayuh,..... There's probably more of that stuff elsewhere in the fuel system,....

Find it, 'n clean it out,....

That's why checkin' the Contents of the fuel separator filter is so important,....

Between it, 'n the filter in the carb, yer covered, no need for another filter,....

Oh,... 'n filters are replaced rather than cleaned,....
