My boat has twin V-6 Mercruisers MPI 4.3 L. The engines have 200 hours on them. The other day after running at 3500 RPM for 30 minutes I came to a stop and had them at idle in neutral gear for 10 minutes. The starboard engine stalled out. After 2 attemps the engine re-started and I had no problems getting back to port. Yesterday, I pulled out of the dock before the engines were fully warmed and the port engine stalled. In this case, the port engine may not have been fully engaged in gear. Is here anything I should be checking? This is a new boat for me and I do not have service records but the boat has been serviced according to the previous owner. I do not know if the fuel filters were changed but the boat was winterized last season and the oil and oil filters were changed. Could this indicate the need to change the fuel filter?

Re: engine stalled

How do you like your new boat i remember your last posts.

Anyway you might have some clog in the screen filters. I'm not sure where they are located in your boat.

You have water seporaters on each motor? If yes dump in clear container what do you see?

Water is heavier than gas let it sit a few minutes you'll see if alot of water in filter.

You can change the filter now or screw it back on and change next year. Or at winterization, is when i do mine.

You could run some fuel injector cleaner thru the carbs bye adding the additive in the gas.

Buy it in wal-mart.

Just for some info you got fuel coming out the tank to a tee and than splitting to both motors?

Re: engine stalled

One of my policies after buying a second hand car or boat is to perform a FULL service, regardless of what the PO tells me... That way I have a known starting point for the future service history.

Your problems sound like that are caused by something common to both engines... That could well be fuel. How are the batteries hooked up? Do you have completely separate batteries for each engine, or are they commoned? The only other thing I would investigate is engine room ventilation. ie, temperatures...

Cris he did the right moves, he had a pro go over it. Just got it. Maybe just a nervous new boat owner with a real, real expensive new boat.

I know it can't be cheap and i bet he ain't looking to scrimp a nickle here and there.

Probably wants it right.

Clean the screens, check the seporaters, and see how it works from there.

I'm not saying he's penny pinching... I read this
I do not know if the fuel filters were changed
in his original post and made my comment....

If I was not sure, I would change them....

Re: engine stalled

Thanks Chieflan and achris. I am loving this Chaparral. To answer some of the questions. The boat has 3 batteries, one for each engine and a house battery. The boat has removable fuel filters that look like oil filters. They are cheap to replace. The engines had full checks on a computer by a certified marine surveyor. No problems were detected. Adding some fuel injector cleaner to the tank seems harmless. Any special brand? I will have a full service when the boat comes out in two months including changing the plugs and any other preventive maintenance that needs to be done. I am planning a cruise around Manhattan island next week and I prefer to have the comfort of counting on both of my engines working properly when I enter New York Harbor. There is a lot of boat traffic out there and some of it is really big like ferries, tankers etc.

I don't know how many gallons your gonna be putting in your tank. But i think most treat 30 gallons.

Read the label straight fuel injector cleaner, not carb and injector cleaner.

Have a good time At night yankee stadium is lighted up, better when a games on.

Steinbriener parks his boat at the dock when hes there.

Water falls are nice also at night.
