I just removed and replaced my lower unit and now when ever I try to shift into either forward or reverse...the engine stalls as soon as it tries to engage. Two notes in my manual says to "5.Move shift shaft clockwise to shift gear housing into forward gear. 6.Place drive shaft housing shift shaft in the full forward position." Originally, I performed step number 5 but could not get the splines to line up, and after numerous attempts of lowering and raising the lower unit, finally got it to line up but now I'm figuring number 5 got undone. I hate to admit it but I overlooked number 6 until this posting. So, can anyone tell me what's going on? I'm figuring I will have to drain my gear oil again and lower the unit. Then perform step 5 and hopefully get it to line up. In reference to note number 6, I'm not really sure what they mean by "full forward position"? And if I can correct my problem without having to lower my unit, please tell me so.

PS...Should my drive shaft be stuck in one position(about 1/8 inch of movement) when the lower unit is removed?

Thanks in advance for any info given.

Unfortunately,
You've Got to go Back to Step #4..............
And, Start from There...... By the Book........
"drive shaft" If you Mean the Vertical Shaft,
The Only Resistance should be the water pump impeller.........
Until you shift it into gear............

Good Luck.......

Sounds like you might be having a problem with your momentary interupt switch and or cable adjustment. The motor has to be "shut down" for just a split second or two, while engaging the gears. Those outdrives are a pain to put back on,,especially if doing it all alone !!

Shift to forward and the prop will spin one direction with a clicking noise, not at all in the other direction. Now shift to reverse and the prop will reverse the same instructions. If this occurs, you have it right. The motor is diening for another reason if so. The shift interupt should be for removing it from gear only. As you shift, watch the big plate on your motor where the shift cables are attached. There is a microswitch on the plate, you can unplug it and try it to make sure there isn't a problem with a binding cable interfering with the switch. The switch should only depress when going out of gear, not in.

If the engine is dieing and the switch is the cause, unplugging it will eliminate that as the cause, regardless of where the boat is. You can usually tell just by watching the plate, as the entire plate moves to hit the switch. The plate should stay still going into gear and just the cables move.

Yes,
Except, It Isn't Supposed To Move At All.......

You're leading sailornsea to Treat the Symptom.....
Not the Problem...........
ONLY With Water Pressure Againest the Prop.......

On the trailer, the Switch Plate Should NOT Move At All...................
IF it Does.... There's a PROBLEM........

So,
On the Trailer,
This is a Symptom,
Not the Cause of the Problem.........
