ENGINE Stalling

Hello,

Writing from new caledonia with a question or 2.

Lately I got a boat from a friend ( sundancer 240) with a new engine (MAG MPI 300Hp). The sterndrive was damaged so I had to change it from a BIII to a BI ( a sterndrive I had from a previous boat).
However, I have a small problem.
There is a "snap" at the passage of reverse gear or switching
between forward and reverse gear, and sometimes the engine stalls if I do it gently. I have to be quick to avoid a stall.
Would you guys know the reason?

Thank you

Rod

Could use more info on the "snap", is there an actual noise or the engine stumbles?

This sounds like a shift interrupter switch but the Bravo would not use one

Was the low switched between the B1 and B3 drives, or was the whole B1 drive used?

No it would be more like the engine stumbles.
With the BIII, there was no problem, it was possible to go gently from forward to neutral, even from forward to rear without having to rush between these positions to avoid the engine to stall.
It is the whole B1 drive.

If the drive is full of clean gear lube and the other was working fine, then its probably the sliding clutch in the top half of the drive.

Don't know what happened to the B3 but if the problem was in the lower section only, you may be able to swap the upper half of the other drive to current drive. There may be an issue only if the drive is a first gen Bravo drive

What happened to the B3?

My friend told me the upper part of the BIII had a shock and had to be changed. Since the engine had to be changed he bought a full mercruiser package. He sold the lower part of the BIII since it was in good condition.
When the package arrived, the seller had made a mistake, it was an alpha which was not big enough for the 24ft sundancer.. So he asked for a refund and since I had a BI available, I told him we could manage something.
You know the whole story.

The the engine is set up for an alpha? If so disconnect the shift interrupt switch which is two wires on the shift plate. Just cover the ends (do not connect the ends). The shift interrupt drops the ignition out when coming out of gear and is required to disengage the dog style clutch on an alpha drive. Bravo with a cone clutch doesn't require this. Should work fine, without an interrupt.

Yep it was set up for an alpha. Since I was not sure about the right things to do, I asked a local engineer to remove the alpha sterndrive and use my BI. You think he forgot to do that (or did not know about it), causing that problem with the engine?

Not sure which year or serial number your motor is, but there should be a connector on the shift plate which connects to the interrupter.
