Hello All:

I was wondering something. I have a 1985 75HP Mercury Outboard. When I put it into gear slowly it sometimes stalls. Does anyone have a clue as to why this maybe happening? It runs just fine if I use a little more speed to put it into gear. It also runs great throughout the RPM range. what is going on? It has not become an issue yet, but I am afraid it may sooner or later.

Claude

It's mostly just a matter of "tune"

Perhaps a set of spark plugs, or a carb adjustment, or decarb treatment, or ignition timing check, or........... See where I'm going with this. It's mostly just a matter of the level of tune it's in.

Spark plugs are easy enough to change with new ones. Carb adjustment might require a service manual for you to do. A compression check is something that a lot of us consider a requirement when troubleshooting a motor's level of tune.

By the way it's not good to slowly engage your gears. It's much better to directly put in in gear without hesitation so no grinding occurs as that will reduce the life of the gears.
