I have a 82 mercruiser 470 engine it starts with key as soon as I release the key it stalls , I cannot find a ballast resistor anywhere on the boat to check , I tested the points with key in on position no spark , but it will start when using the key but stalls immediately, any help would be greatly appreciated

the ballast wire is in the harness. you have two feeds to the coil, one from the ballast wire, one from the I/R terminal on the starter.

first, verify that you have battery voltage to the coil during cranking, and about 9-10 volts with just the key on

second make sure your points have been serviced.

Thank you I will check for voltage at the coil , the points are new , I know sometimes you can buy new parts that are bad so I will double check them .

regarding the points, you need to file points....new or used.
