I have a frozen volvo AQ 125 in A 1989 Bayliner, and have found a AQ 130 volvo out of a 1984 Trohpy. Are these engines interchangeable? if so any problems I need to know about? thanks any and all replies appreciated, first time on doing this

Hello fellow aq125 owner. I have a few of these engines. Two are AQ125b's, one is a 151, They are all 4cy. The 130 you got is probably the same b230 series. It's probably stamped on the cast portion of the engine block.

I have not seen the AQ130 engine it is 500 miles away and the guy cant send me pictures. I think I need to ask him about the valve cover and if it has a timing belt

AQ 130 is Volvo B20 engine block, all 4cyl. volvos are interchangeable with each other , including inline 6 cyl. B30.
Which OD model you have ?

You will need the exhaust tube from the 130

Yes , the exhaust pipes are different for every engine model ,if you didn't got one with donor engine ,will find one on e-bay.

Re: engine swap volvo penta

thanks for all the info, can I just change the exhaust manifold from my AQ125 to the AQ 130 motor instead of the exhaust pipe??

All B20 engines have same ports layout,if this is easier for you ,I think is doable.

I am actually surprised that a '84 trophy would have a 130, is the OP sure it's a 130 and not a 131

The 131 should be a easy swap, same ex manifold an added plus is the heat exchanger from the 131 is designed so an automotive circ pump can be used. Not too sure about the primary drive shaft splines.

Re: engine swap volvo penta

If it's a b23 block then it should be a straight forward job. If it's the b20 block it gets a little more complicated I would think, since the exhaust and intake switch sides. The b20 also uses a cast iron head which I believe weighs more, so you may need to add front engine mounts if you're current aq125A is cantilever mount like many of them are.

Plus I don't think the Volvo penta b20's ran heat exchangers?

I guess just make sure it's a 131 with the b23 (or b230 block?) and heat exchanger.

It has extra engine mounts on it just forward of center, and it has a red heat exchanger that looks the same in the pictures I got from him. It is coming with the bell housing complete, plus I have the stuff off my old engine too for any spline differences. A boat shop did his swap to a 6 cyl model and the 131 was pulled complete with all accesories. Boat shop told him it will work perfect for my boat

Re: engine swap volvo penta

OK thanks for all the input here, I picked up my AQ131 and I have a distributer quuestion. It has a new distributer on it with a pertronix unit in it. Boat shop said it was hooked up wrong, black to positive and red to ground, and that ruins the pickup in distributer. It was only for a few minutes, and swapping to correct did not fix the problem of starting it. Anybody know if this is true on the wiring of the pertonix unit?? I think I will use my points distributer to see if it will run, as there is no paper work on the pertronnix with the distributer in the engine now. Any help on this would be appreciated, I have only had one pertronix in a old ford truck, and dont remember the specifics of it

Go to the pertronics web site and read their troubleshooting section. There's a continuity test that will tell you if it's burnt out. And yes, it only takes a few seconds to burn it up.

While you've got the engine out, do yourself a favor and change out the PDS bearing.

Re: engine swap volvo penta

Whichever distributor you use make sure the advance works correct. Mine had some bad springs under the points and I had to find a donor one since new is listed at something like $1,500
I love my Pertronix. It is the best $100 spent so even if you have to replace it, go for it.
You can sell a lot of your old engine parts on Ebay and recoup a lot of your cost. Things like the heat exchanger, if the same, I would keep as they are very expensive to replace.
Buy a new exhaust manifold. They are throw away parts and only last a few years if used in salt water. Not changing it will ruin the aluminum head. Ask me how I know.... Osco is a good replacement. Check for best prices on the internet.
