I have a 17ft fourwinns boat with a 4.3l Volvo in it. The boat goes 50-55mph. I would like it to go faster. Could I just get a 5.0l Engine and put it in its place?

Re: Engine Swap

You could as long as it's a complete engine setup with all the accessories. None of the V6 will work, well the fuel pump, carb, and alternator might. You will have to move the side mount pads on the stringer. Further forward on a V8. Gear ratio in the drive is different, but MIGHT be close enough on a 5.0 to do a prop switch and get away with it. After all that, you will only see a couple of MPH increase in top speed. Is it worth all that work and expense for 2-3 mph?

Sorry the boat only goes 50mph no more. And it is 1996 Fourwinns 17ft long. It should be faster.

Re: Engine Swap

the 4.3 MPI and the base 5.0 have the same HP - imo, that would be the worst swap ever. Just go MPI on your 4.3. Or sell the carbed motor and get an MPI one

Re: Engine Swap

boats below 20' have floatation foam under the deck and over time it gets saturated with water to the point it could use replaced..

What makes you think it should be faster? 50 MPH on a boat is still pretty quick. Driving on water is like driving with the brakes on, so it takes a lot to do a little.
