I have a 1982 235 Evinrude going to install 2003 Johnson 70 horse 4 stroke. What is the difference in the wiring harness plug and the shifting leakage, what will I need to make this work?
Thanks,

What happened to the controls and wiring harness for the 70 hp ?? They normally go with the mtr.

Re: Engine swaping need some info.

I know the '96 and on remote control can be used on the '95 and older motors with the addition of a kit #0176711 for around $180.....if there isnt a similar kit available to do the opposite it might be more trouble than its worth, someone may be able to correct me on that though.

Re: Engine swaping need some info.

The control boxes were all the same up through 1995. OMC changed them in 1996. The cables remain directly interchangeable, but the electrical cable connectors changed in 1996. You can purchase a special electrical adapter/connector from Bombardier to adapt your new engine to your old control box. The special adapter is part number 176345. That part sells for nearly $350. You might want to just price out a new control box at that point. Keep in mind that you may loose some of the new engine's system functionality when you adapt to the older control box.

I have all the cables and control box on the boat. I just need to know at the motor what i will need? Like the shifting leakage and steering leakage is it the same and the elec plug. Thanks emdsapmgr -mark 1961

Shifting, throttle and steering should be not a problem. The question I have is why are you repowering with less than 1/3 of the former power? If the boat is rated for 235HP, it will likely not plane with 70HP.

I was going to ask the same question as above. What size boat is this? If you had a 235 on it before, you will likely not be happy with a 70 hp, if it will even plane.

Re: Engine swaping need some info.

Since the four-stroke was made by suzuki, are you certain the throws on the control box for a suzuki engine are the same as an Evinrude? You cannot adjust cables to make up any difference. Cable adjustmets are for length -- not for throw. Some engines also pull the cable to open the throttle while some push. Don't know whether or not those are issues for you but you need to verify them regardless. I would also doubt that the wiring between the Evinrude box and Suzuki motor are the same either. You have some expensive electrical stuff on that motor. Make darned sure you know what you are doing.

Thanks Silvertip, That is why I was asking. Cause I am not sure, as I haven't received the motor yet, so I really don't know what the wiring is or the leakage or shift lever looks like, just thought someone on here had done it before. And could give me some advice. Thanks

The carburator linkage ratios are different on evinrude 9,9 & 28 hp. I have both linkages. Wound up drilling a new hole to make life simple by using 1 control station for both engines.

Yes, 235HP on a 16 foot flat bottom craft is likely a bit too much...That is when some air gets under the bow and you do the backflip, with a half twist...

I have done 30 degrees up with only a 30 hp on a 15" Lowe Aluminum. I could hear my pulse. " I did not yell "MOMMY".

That loudly.
