Engine temp question

I got into some shallow water in the lake today and was stirring a lot of junk up. Keeping an eye on engine temp, anything else I should look out for also? Also running a 92 4.3LX, manual says a 143 thermostat, at idle engine warms up to 170, then holds once I start idling or get on plan temp drops to 150-160 and holds...is that the normal range? Thanks in advance!

Helm gauges notoriously inaccurate. Does it show 170 whenever you drop back to idle? It shouldn't read higher than when you're moving. When did you replace the impeller last?

My 4.3 with a 140ƒ thermostat stays nailed to the 150ƒ on my gauge - that said I never calibrated the gauge so it probably is off a little. I always suspect impeller damage when sucking up sand and rocks.

Mine too--152'. Unless I turn on the radio (158'). Or the blower, or the lights. Or everything (215')

my gauge with a 160 thermostat reads about 153-154

Ayuh,..... How long ago was the impeller changed,..??

2-3 seasons ago impeller was changed, probably about 40-60 hours of run time.
Usually tops out at 170 while idling, drops 155 when under way, then will creep up once only idle. Figured it was probably the impeller. I guess regardless of run time the impeller looses it effectiveness.
