Engine Temp

This may sound dumb but can an engine run to cold? I just put a new thermostat in (the manual called for a 140 degree) I ran it with the muffs after and the temp got to about 130, i took it to the lake and ran it hard and the temp gauge was only showing about 120 after about a half hour. The manifolds and risers were warm to the touch but not hot (which I think is normal)

Keep in mind ijust replaced the impeller and the lake water temp was about 50-55 degrees.

Thanks....

Re: Engine Temp

I would say yes, engines can run to cold. Just like a car or any other engine, it has a designed operating range with reguards to temp. Do some research and see what the operating range is for your motor. Keep in mind water temp will play a big part of it, but than again if your engine is making the correct ammount of horsepower and running well, I wouldn't worry about it running a tad on the cool side. If your worried about the thermostat not opening and restricting water flow you might look into a partial flow thermostat witch allows water to flow constantly and only fully opens at the designed temp. An old trick is to drill a small hole in the thermostat allowing some water to bypass. This is usually done for overheating problems though.

Re: Engine Temp

Yeah, It ran great, RPMs where good, speed was good. It may have just been the water temp
