Engine Throttle Problems

I have a '95 Caravalle 19' boat w/ a 5.0L Volva Penta engine. I bought the boat used, with low-hours. I am having trouble with idling.

When I crank the engine, the engine will start, but it will die out after several seconds if I do not quickly put it into gear, and give it a large amount of gas. Even if I simply start the engine and put it in drive, the engine will sputter out without a sufficient amount of gas. I have no problems once I begin moving. Sometimes I am only able to start the engine by sliding the throttle stick out, pumping it several times, and cranking the engine. Even then though, once I return the throttle stick to the neutral position, if I don't quickly give it gas, it dies.

Is this a carburetor problem? Or is it simply that the idle is too low?

Do you need any more information?

Thanks!!!!
-shack

Re: Engine Throttle Problems

You might start first by resetting the idle adjustment for a faster idle speed. If that doesn't solve the problem, you can open the idle adjustment screws a bit more (counterclockwise --richer -- 1/8 turn at a time). You can do both adjustments with the engine running, but you may have to manually advance the throttle initially to keep it running. Watch out when making adjustments to a running engine.

There are a number of possible causes -- dirty carburetor jets, requiring a carb cleaning and/or rebuild, or possibly old or contaminated gas. The problem may resolve itself if you can run the boat for a while, assuming it hasn't been run regularly.

Are you not able to advance the throttle in neutral?

Jin

Re: Engine Throttle Problems

If you are asking if I can rev the engine...yes. Again, once I am able to get the boat moving, there is NO problem at high speeds. The problem is that whenever I go to put it in gear, it slows down and dies.

Thanks for the replys!

Re: Engine Throttle Problems

shack, Are you allowing the choke time to work?
When starting "cold" you should push the throttle fully open (once) this allows the choke plate to close, after returning to the neutral position, then start the motor. When you start allow some warm-up time for the choke to open fully. You should have a button on your shift controls to allow you to throttle up without being in gear. After warmed up check your idle speed and adjust as needed.
