Engine Tilt not working - 1990 Bayliner with OMC outdrive

I have a 1990 Bayliner with a 2.3 engine and an OMC Cobra outdrive. Bayliner used 1989 components and I believe switched to the Mercruiser outdrive in the 2nd half of 1990.

When I activate the tilt switch on the throttle handle there is no response, not even a clicking sound.

I have checked the electrical system, fuses, circuit breaker, tilt switch, connectors, and even the motor. I applied 12 volts to the motor and it turns. That leaves the relays (contactor) which I believe is OMC part No. 986281. Does anyone know how to check it? It?s a pretty safe bet that is the problem but the part cost $200-$300 so I don?t want to buy one unless I?m sure it really is the problem. Any suggestions or ideas about a cheaper set of replacement relays?

Thanks for your help

When you said you check the electrical system, did you just check each component individually or as a system? the first thing I would do is check and and all connections (most common problem) then I would check to see if there is applied voltage at the pump when the switch is activated. if not, run a jumper from the switch to the motor. if it works you have a bad wire somewhere. also, check the ground, even a with an ohm meter showing a ground does not mean you have a good ground (second most common problem)
do that then let us know how it works.

Thanks Lucky Penny,

I rechecked each component as well as the entire system. I found an intermittent line connector which I re-soldered and it solved half the problem. That resulted in the tilt drive working in the up mode but would not tilt down. Out of ideas, I cut off the top of the hermatically sealed relay box and found that one of the relays had a broken plastic part which I have repaired. All is working fine for now but I don't know how long my "fix" will work.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Best regards,

Rich
