Engine water temp increase after shutdown?

Volvo AQ130C 4 cylinder, raw water cooled

I've noticed that after running close to WOT (and within WOT RPM spec for engine) for a while on a hot day, that after stopping and shutting down the engine, if I turn the key to the accessory position so my gauges are working a minute or so after stopping, the engine water temperature has risen higher than where it was while running. It will continue to rise slowly until the reading is about 3/4-7/8 way into the "green" area and then it slowly begins to drop. I don't have any overheating issues when the engine is running and when running the temperature reading is usually about 1/3-1/2 way into the green area.

This has been nagging me for a while and was just wondering if this is normal or not, and if not, what might be causing it? It seems like it would fairly normal since new, cool water is no longer being circulated thru the engine and instead the water that is in the engine is absorbing the engine's heat. Any comments? Thanks.

AM, My boat does the same thing. After a hard or long run I always allow the engine to run just above idle for several minutes to get the excess heat out of the cooling system.8)

Thats very normal, the water in the system actually will heat up a little after shut down because there is no flow.
Nothing to worry about. I usually run mine at slow speeds a couple minutes after running it hard..

mine does the same thing after shutting down the restarting. cools down fine. the best check on mine is a lake I go to has a long no wake zone from one of the marinas. long idle time and mine never gets even close to warm runs right where it should. if it were running warm while idling I would be more worried about a weak impeller or clogged passages.
