I am in the process of repowering my 1930's wooden runabout with modern power and am wondering if anyone has info regarding the weight of a GM 4.3 marine engine with velvet drive transmission. The current motor is a flathead 4 cylinder weighing about 600 pounds. I would like to keep approximate weight the same. I am considering using aluminium exhaust manifolds and intake if needed to keep the weight down. Thanks if advance for any info BK.

Re: engine weight

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

Well, I did a little searching around and I am amazed at how hard it is to find the weight of any engine!!

GM Powertrain indicates that a Vortech 4.3L engine has a shipping wt of about 450lbs: http://www.gmpowertrain.com/Libraries/Marine_Engines/Vortec_4_3L_V-6_Marine.sflb.ashx

The Velvet Drive (71C) that would be on the back of a V-6 (and others) seems to weigh around 100-150lbs. http://www.velvetdrive.com/7172.html

This sounds like a pretty cool project! post pictures!

Regards,

Rick

Re: engine weight

Mercruiser lists the weight of a V6 with all accessories and an Alpha at 848 pounds (MPI is 865):

http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/inboards/sterndrives/tks4-3l_specs.php

They list an Alpha as weighing 85 pounds:

http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/inboards/sterndrives/alphaone_specs.php

I would guess that a V6 carbed motor with all accessories, but without the drive would weigh 763 pounds, and an MPI would weigh 780 pounds.

Don't ferget to subtract the weight of the drive, gimbal, trim cyls, pump, etc too! (probably a "tad" more than 85lbs.....)

Re: engine weight

Thanks for the replies. This is a wonderful forum with good info. I think the engine weight should be OK but I would like to decrease if a bit so will investigate aluminium exhaust and intke manifolds. Anyone know a source or recommend a manufactuer. Brian

Re: engine weight

I upgraded my 4.3L. I found that the stock intake manifold weighs 28 lbs vs 11.9 for an Eddy 2111 or 2114 aluminum intake. I used GLM aluminum manifolds at 54 lbs vs stock at 150 lbs. The boat seemed to like it very much. ;)

Anything that reduces the amount of weight in the back of the boat is a good thing!!

(I'd like to build up an aluminum 383 with aluminum manifolds and risers to replace my 454!!:p)

Nice! I'd skip the manifolds and go with hydro headers. Lighter still. :)
