Engine will not accellerate, only idle's

I have a 1983 35 hp Evinrude. When i turn on the engine, it idle's fine, my problem begins when i try to accellerate, the engine dies out. I am almost stumped, I replaced the carb, confirmed that the fuel pump was getting fuel, checked to make sure the spark plugs were working, checked compression and made sure the engine was running on both cylinders. I have a small hunch that it could be the timing is off, but i am not sure how to check that or how to fix it, i recently installed a new starter into it so there is a possibility we bumped something during the install...

you will need an engine specific manual OEM. when you did the carb you may have thrown the link n sinc off. this coordinates the timing and the carbs, so they advance together. it is a easy, but lengthy step by step process. and there are variations for different engines.

Problem occurred before the carb was cleaned so it couldnt be the link n sync, any other ideas?

kirb - In your original post you said that you put a "new" carb on but later you said that it was cleaned???? If the the problem is not solved with the adjustments to timing + sync & link - go back to the carb as that is the most likely cause of the problem.
