Engine Will Not Crank Over

Hey guys,

I've had a few instances this year when I go to start the engine, turn the key and I get nothing (no click, no noise). After I try to turn the key a few more times, the engine will turn over and start, however this is making me nervous.

2000 4.3 Mercruiser V6
Motor Serial# L642312 (0L642312)

The service manual suggests:

Remote control lever not in neutral position
Battery charge low; damaged wiring; loose electrical connections
Circuit breaker tripped
Blown fuse
Ignition switch
Slave solenoid
Faulty neutral start safety switch - Open circuit
Starter solenoid
Starter motor
Mechanical engine malfunction

There are also instructions for testing the Ignition Key Switch.

I'm thinking the problem is due to corrosion or maybe the starter. Next time I head down to the lake I will bring my DVM and some wire brushes to clean the grounds and battery terminals. The engine runs great and I just did a full tune up.

Any suggestions on how to narrow this down a little? Thanks.

Thank you Don and Bondo. I will print that post out for reference and try to trace the entire circuit and clean everything I see.
