I also have the same problem. My boat is a 2000 Larson 186 sei. It has the 3.0 ho volvo penta engine. I bought it last fall with engine problems. I fixed them but cannot get the boat to shut off with the key or lanyard switch. I did replace the ignition and hooked the wires up the same as the origina . There are 4 wires and none of them are a ground. There is a purple wire that is hooked up to the ignition terminal. When I use a 12 volt tester on the switch the positive is bright and the purple wire is dead. When I turn the key to ignition the power wire goes dim and the purple wire is dim. If I unhook the purple wire in the ignition position the power is normal again. I also have a problem with the tachometer. It goes to zero when I turn the key on but when it starts it is reading max rpm. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the diode at the alternator. If it shorts, it will back feed the ignition

Ignition switch.

I just purchased a 2000 Larson 186sei with a 3.0ho volvo penta engine. The previous owner had the motor rebuilt but never finished installing it. I got it running but it will not shut off with the ignition switch or lanyard. I have to pull the coil wire to shut it off. I replaced the ignition switch before I got it running. When I test the switch it has power and gets power to the ignition terminal. There is a purple wire on that terminal. When the wire is hooked up it is very dim on the tester. The power terminal also goes dim. When I disconnect the purple wire full power comes back to both terminals. The tachometer also shows pegged once the engine starts. Any help is appreciated.

I forgot to mention that I disconnected the purple wire from the alternator and started the boat with the same results.

Does it continue to run normally when you key off ? Or is it a stutter and a rough running ? If it’s the latter it could be water in the fuel.
