Hi all Ive been rewiring my 1980 Johnson 85 v4 engine
and I've got some probs , firstly I've wired the ignition
switch to the engine harness I think as to the manual
I got power on all cables and to the choke but engine
didn't start ? what am I doing wrong
secondly I've then sparked two wires together and now
there is no power to any of the wires at the ignition
switch ? Why . would I have done any damage or just
blown the fuse in the engine of which I can't find any ideas
would be great as I can see this engine fast becoming
a mooring anchor !!!!!
thanks mark

Re: Engine wireing

Well first, you probably blew the fuse. It is in a rubber fuseholder in the red wire somewhere near/ leading to/ the starter solenoid.

Have no idea why it won't start without knowing what you did wrong. Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it and how to read a wiring diagram? That is the next step, unless you just want to start throwing parts at it.

Re: Engine wireing

Hi thanks for your reply I've got a multi meter there
was 12.8 v across the board before I shorted the
ignition switch now 0 volts except through the tilt n
trim I guess I have blown the fuse as there is still
power from the batt to the engine at the multi plug
Thanks again mark

Re: Engine wireing

just a thought , i read somewhere that a automobile ignition switch will not work on a boat motor. sounds like you are doing great good luck!

Re: Engine wireing

mark take a look at this link it may help you work out the problem. If the engine cranked but you had no spark the black/yellow wire might have been grounded by the key or by the kill switch. If you have lost power to B at the ignition then you have blown the fuse that is connected to the battery side of the starter solenoid in a red rubber holder with a metal clamp on it as f_R said.
