My 1982 evinrude v6 has a mind of its own. I was trouble shooting trying to find out why I have a popping sound when running. I was pulling plug wires when the engine began to rev up. I could not get it to quit until I shut it off. I tried backing down on the timing at idle but it continues to rev. Is this a stator problem or what. :grumpy:

It could be a power pack prob with the timing going ape or else the mtr leaned out on fuel.

sounds like its running lean. pump the bulb while running and see if it slows down. Do not run for a long period or rev it on muffs as it could go into a run away

I have the motor running off of an electric fuel pump. all carbs were cleaned When checking to engine for the popping sound I had all spark plug wires off but the top cylinders, one on each side. The engine was still running. When I began to put the wires back on is when the engine started to rev. Is there a way to check the power packs?

So you went from running on 2 cylinders to 3-4-5-6 and it reved up. I think that is normal. It should run better with all the plugs firing.

If the link arm to the timer base gets disconnected and moves to the full advance position for some reason, it can rev.
