I have a 1977 Ebbtide with a 1978 Mariner 80 HP ser # 4843369. I replaced the internal wire harness, stator, and trigger. I finally got it started today and running good. The problem is when I turned the key off it kept running. I had to disconnect the fuel line to finally get it to shut off. My ignition switch has 5 wires: orange, yel/black, red, white, and orange. From all the diagrams I have looked at the orange wire is my cut-off and I have an orange from my internal harness to my switchbox. I don't have the mercury switch in it since I was told that is only used to shut off the motor if the trim is too much. I don't have the standard black/yel kill wire since it has a new harness. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Billy

Check electrical at www.brokeboats.com
Black w yellow stripe is standard for kill switch since the 70s.Most outboards spark is self generated like a lawn mower, with the primary side shorted to ground to kill.

Thanks Spike. I'm a newbie at this. I was totally surprised I was able to replace everything and to get it started. What do you mean the primary side shorted to ground to kill? I think my orange wire replaces the black/yel wire since it's a new harness. Should it be grounded somewhere on my switchbox? My orange wire runs straight from the harness to the switchbox.

Billy
