My boat has been sitting without running for over a year. I have a 1991 40 HP Outboard. When I start it up I have to keep pushing the key in to choke it in order for it to keep running. I have had this problem before, took it to the shop and they have cleaned the carberator. Is there a way to do this myself. Please give me explicit details because I do not know much about engines. Thanks.

You need to remove the carbs and take apart, Clean with carb cleaner and reinstall with new carb kit.

The need for choking is consistent with running too lean. Its running lean because one or more of the jets and orifices are partly blocked by deposits and aren't supplying enough fuel in the air/fuel mixture. You need to remove the carbs and do a thorough cleaning/rebuild. It isn't difficult. The hardest part is usually getting to the carbs to remove them.

Buy a manual if you don't have one. Never work on an outboard without one. Completely disassemble the carb, clean ALL of the orifices and jets with carb cleaner and (this is important) compressed air (if you don't have a compressor go to Radio Shack and buy a can of air). Install the rebuild kit parts (which is usally a new float valve and some gaskets or O-rings), set the float height and the idle mixture screw to the manual specs and reinstall the carbs with new gaskets. You'll be good to go.

Run it on a can of Sea-foam to 2 gal. gas in a gas can. You will need a short piece of gas hose.
this may save a lot of work if there's a little varnish clogging up the carbs. This will also de-carb the jugs.

check your idle mixtures. i had same prob with my 1150 I6. do as said above, rebuild / clean carbs. run seafoam. youll be amased. idle screws should be 1 1/2 turns out frmo gently seated. thiis is usually a good placeto start, each motor is a tad fiff, but all close to this

I got my boat this year from my bro-in law who was stationed in North Korea for 17 months, the boat stayed on the trailer all the while. We got it down to Fl. from North Carolina and first time out under a load I had to run holding the choke.I
found the Seafoam at Advanced Auto Parts, used one of the two tanks with 1 gallon mixed gas and one can Seafoam in the muffs. Been out 3 times since and runs great.

You might also check all your gas lines and especially the primer bulb. They should be soft and pliable. The primer bulb is usually the first to go.
