Engine wont start - Fuel Questions

I have a 28HP Johnson SPL.

Motor has been running fine for months. I started it up today after sitting for afew weeks and it started on 3rd crank. I was out on the water about 1 mile out... and started to slow down to throw an anchor... then the motor just died. Had to use a trolling motor to get back.

When I got back, I changed the plugs (been meaning to do that). Still didnt start though. I noticed the primer ball does not really stay hard though... However, I am able to choke with the key and SEE fuel in the carb. Is it possible to still choke and get fuel... but not have the ball still firm?

If anyone else has anything thoughts... please chime in. For kicks I also checked compression when I changed plugs and got 120/110.

2. Electric and manual start: Flywheel rotates but engine does not attempt to start. .
Remove a spark plug, reconnect it and hold it against engine block. Keep it there while turning engine over.

Does it make a hot, blue spark when attempting to start?
If no, troubleshoot ignition system.

Has hot, blue spark?
Squirt some fuel mix (NOT ether) into the carb(s). Does it attempt to start? *
If yes, you have inadequate fuel. Troubleshoot fuel system and review starting procedure.

If no, check that carb is not flooding from failed float needle.

Still wont attempt to start. Check compression. If bad, troubleshoot mechanicals.

Good compression on all cylinders. Check flywheel for sheared key, check crankcase for sealing at carb(s), inlet manifold and bypass covers.

If its electric start unplug the electric cable and hand crank it.If its a bad kill switch it should run.

Re: Engine wont start - Fuel Questions

Seems to be getting spark on both plugs. (I am a 1 man show at the moment... waiting on a friend to help confirm).

You got me wondering when you mentioned kill switch... because the motor does not even make an "attempt" at starting, like a cough or anything. I used to use a rip cord until I recently fixed the starter, but I need to have the key turned to get it started even with the rip cord. How do I bypass this? There is no "kill switch" on my setup. I use about 4-6 wires from a wire harness that goes to my key and fuse panel and my 2 main leads (pos/neg) for the battery.

The motor is a 1996(ish) SPL Johnson 28HP.

Thanks,
