Engine won't start. I tried some things first.

I have a 1991 Envinrude outboard 200 hp V6.

The engine won't start. It does a bit of a ca-chink when I attempt to start it, but won't even start to turn over. I've checked the battery, changed the solenoid and the starter, and I am still getting the same thing.

With the motor cover off, I can see the starter try to spin the motor, but it just doesn't start the spinning.

Uh oh...

Welcome to iboats.

Stop throwing parts at it! lol :)

There is a great thread in the FAQ entitled "Outboard Wont Start" that you should read. Your problem is likely battery or wiring related. Take apart all connections, polish them with a file, make them shine, then re tighten. ALL connections at the battery, solenoid, starter, and grounds. Check wiring for nicks, cuts, abrasions, or "crunching" when you flex it, and replace as needed. Get the battery load tested.

But as I mentioned, check out the FAQ

No doubt I need to stop throwing parts at it... : )

Thanks for the advice and I'll check out the link you referenced and try what you have suggested.

Any additional thoughts are very welcome. Thanks, BtD

Re: Engine won't start. I tried some things first.

Thanks, HighTrim, et al. The FAQ thread you pointed out was very good. I need to recheck my voltage at the points you discussed. I did that previously, which led me to replace the solenoid.

Once upon a time, I was told one trick was to bypass things like safety lanyards, starter switches, solenoids, and connections, was to hook up jumper cables directly from the battery to the starter. Any thoughts on that?

Also, any reason for me to be fearing that something is seriously wrong with the engine internally? We had no sign of smoke or anything. My wife was driving it and it kind of died in idle one day, then wouldn't restart.
