'85 galaxy with omc 5.0 liter

pulled heads and found bad valve; replaced heads, new gaskets, etc. adjusted valves with engine off according to manual; started up easily let it run to operating temp, sounded very nice; shut it down, installed new valve covers and left. went down to boat today(its been about a week) and it won't start; it cranks and starts sometimes but quickly dies and does this 3-5 times and then it puffs out of carb(3-5 consecutive pops) and smoke comes out of carb.......What could it be???

Hello, I am from NORWALK CT and now live in GA. It sounds to me like your timmimg may have moved, I would make shure that your distributor is still tight!!

I'm thinking like Trent. Timing chain jumped?

Not uncommon, if it's a Ford 5.0 with alot of hours.

Sounds like valve timing to me also.........check to see if the valves are opening at the proper time .........run the number one piston to top dead center and align the timing mark, then see if the valves on the number one piston are closed, if not . you have a problem..... the hard part is if the chain has only jumped a tooth or two.......then it is hard to diagnose unless you tear the engine down

there is fuel getting to carb? chain jumped 1-2 teeth will usually run at high rpms if you can get it to start but if valves hit pistons you will have bent pushrods.
