Engine wont start

I have a 1989 40 hp evinrude model # TE40ELCEC . while on the water the other day we cut the engine off and played a while...later on went to start the engine and nothing....changed batteries...checked neutral safety switch on shifter control ...finally turned key switch to the run possition and tried jumping across the solenoid and fired right up....well thought it was the solenoid ...checked it when we got home and it was showing bad ....replaced solenoid and still not turning over ....no click ..nothing ....but will fire right up if jumping solenoid ....can't seem to figure this one out ....maybe the key switch ...need a little help on this one please ....thanks

Check you ignition switch. Just undo it and pull it our of whatever you have it mounted in and check the wires on the post. Put your meter on the post and turn your key to start and make sure you have juice going to it.is possible to get a bad soleniod. Also could you have installed it upside down. It is possible on some models. Are the twin red wires on the bottom post?

The twin reds are on the top post and I put it together as I took it apart so that I wouldn't get it all mixed up lol.....will try the switch later on when it cools down some ...thanks
