engine won't turn over after install

i bought a boat with a seized 350 in it last season. prop turns by hand in F, R and N. in the last few weeks pulled the engine and swapped the block with a truck engine. it turned over by hand prior to installing it back in the boat. i have never aligned/installed an engine myself before but it seemed to go pretty smooth. i got the bell housing bolts lined up pretty close and then with some slightly longer bolts i pulled the engine in little by little by just turning each bolt a half turn (rotating evenly through all the bolts). there was never any friction and the engine just slid into place. The bolts for the mounts were totally rusted out so i haven't bolted them back into the stringer but they are resting on the stringer. when i tried to turn the engine over by hand it is frozen up somewhere. up to this point i haven't known if my outdrive works or not. i pulled the upper gear unit and tried to get it out but am having trouble sliding it out all the way. i can see a lot of rust under the bellows. the upper unit turns 360 degrees but won't pull back. at this point i assume the engine won't turn over because something is frozen in the outdrive? does this sound correct? or is it possible that i have an issue with the alignment of the engine to the outdrive shaft?

any thoughts on what i should try next? continue trying to get the upper unit pulled free? disconnect the engine again and slide it back on the stringers?

You need to let us know what you are working on. You posted in the Volvo Penta section... so we can assume that much... but there are a lot of different outdrives and they have different ways of dealing with the questions are you are asking. A little more info!

Oh sorry. It's a Volvo penta 280 outdrive. Late 80s or early 90s engine
