Engine Year???...Engine Bogs Down

I have what I think is a 1973 Mercury 1500 Thunderbolt outboard but when I looked up the serial number (3497705) it comes up as an Mercury 850 Thunderbolt. The engine is labeled as 150 H.P. I just don't know. I'm not positive what the oil mixture should be and I'd like to look it up but I need to know what the engine is first.

I'm also having a problem with the engine bogging down at full tilt. She'll go for a while and then just throttle down like the engine is being choked. If anyone could help me with this too I'd appreciate it.

A Merc 850 is a four cylinder inline motor, from the seventies or a six cylinder from the 60s.

Your serial number matches a '72 Merc 1150. This should be a inline six with battery driven CDI Ignition and a distributor. You should have a Thunderbolt Ignition as well as a Direct Charge words on the cowling. It will likely have a big, ugly red plastic coil.

The fuel mix is 50::1 for the '72 1150. If ti bogs a t high speed, rebuild the fuel pump(s). You may have two fuel pumps located on the transfer covers.
